Rodley Swing Bridge

A New Canal Crossing in Leeds

The new Rodley Swing Bridge in Leeds was constructed in 2022 and opened in 2023 to replace the previous bridge, which was no longer fit for purpose. This modern canal crossing provides essential infrastructure for residents, businesses, and visitors in the Rodley area.

Delivered in partnership with Leeds City Council (LCC), Yorkshire Water (YW), and the Canal & River Trust (CRT), the bridge was designed in accordance with their requirements and built to meet strict safety, engineering, and operational standards. Yorkshire Water and Leeds City Council required the design to incorporate a manual operation rather than an electrically powered swing bridge, as they considered this approach to offer greater reliability.

Fully funded by Rodley Homes and costing more than £2.5 million, the Rodley Swing Bridge provides a primary access route across the Leeds–Liverpool Canal. It serves the new Canal Walk residential development, as well as key local destinations including Rodley Cricket Club and the Rodley Nature Reserve, improving connectivity across the community.

As one of the first new bridges constructed on this stretch of the Leeds–Liverpool Canal for many years, it has been designed to meet the demands of modern urban living. The bridge is built to standards suitable for adoption by the council’s highways department, supporting vehicular access, including emergency services and waste collection vehicles. In addition, the project has provided the area with a new pedestrian and cycle route, promoting sustainable travel in Rodley and the wider Leeds area.

Since completion, the bridge has been fully operational and is designed for straightforward day-to-day use. As a specialist structure, however, it operates differently from traditional canal bridges, while still meeting the requirements of both Yorkshire Water (YW) and Leeds City Council (LCC). Clear operating instructions, including a step-by-step video guide, are available via a QR code located on the bridge or by visiting: [Insert video link].
